Bearer Awards at GalaBaby Bear Hugs Volunteers Honored
Many people who give their time,
talents, and energy to a certain cause or program do so because of a strong belief
that their efforts will help a valuable program. Much
of the time, these giving and caring individual rarely receive any recognition
for their efforts. These are often the best volunteers because they give from
their hearts and expect nothing in return. The
Baby Bear Hugs
program would not be what it is today without so many wonderful volunteers. At
the 10th Anniversary celebration held on February 12th in Yuma
, nine outstanding volunteers were honored and recognized for their
contributions to the program by being given a Bearer
Award. A dictionary was consulted for ideas when the award was being named, and the following was found: Bears-bears—TO BEAR, Bearer- Bearing—a supporting object –CARRY; To give birth; Endure; Sustain. The name Bearer Award is therefore appropriate for someone who supports the Baby Bear Hugs program so that it can endure for young mothers. The
recipient of the Bearer Award “bears up” the organization through
their outstanding dedication, and they are an important influence to those
around them. At
the anniversary gala, each county coordinator announced the name and the
contributions of whom they had nominated to receive the Bearer Award.
Along with applause, each winner was given a candle decorated with bears in the
scent of baby powder. How appropriate! The
winners of this year’s county

Awards are: Cheyenne
County, Karla Pevler, Kiowa County, Kaye Kaza, Kit Carson County, Lila

Phillips County, Betsy Marquardt, Sedgwick County, Michelle Neuth,
Washington County, Brenda Harding, Yuma County, Becky Bledsoe. It
was difficult to decide, but one person was selected as this year’s “Bearer
Award.” Barb Wacker of Morgan
Barb
has been a volunteer with Morgan County Baby
Bear Hugs for 12 years and has donated over
1500 hours to the program. She started as a visitor supporting and encouraging
families. She even made visits in the middle of the night if they were
necessary. She then served on the advisory council for 10 years. Barb
has always been there to support the program. From taking pictures at the Cinco
de Mayo celebration to calling on local businesses for their support, Barb has
been willing to help in any way she can. She is someone who can always be
counted on to help and advise program coordinators. For
a number of years, Barb has served on the Baby
Bear Hugs Board of Directors. This is the
decision-making entity of the program. Barb has recently served as chairperson
and has been responsible for reviewing grants, meeting with the executive
director, and representing Baby Bear Hugs
at workshops and funding functions. Barb
believes in the program and put much time and effort into making it successful
