The Northeast Colorado Health Department honored eight people as public health shining stars at a luncheon on Friday, April 11, 2008 in Sterling to commemorate the department’s 60th anniversary. Pam Gibbs and Kathy Cook - both from the Baby Bear Hugs program in Phillips County were honored for providing information on pregnancy, nutrition, breastfeeding and child discipline. They also promote NCHD programs such as WIC, family planning , immunizations, car seat safety, and environmental concerns and assist in helping to organize health child clinics. “We felt it was time to look outside our agency and recognize the public health efforts of others,” said John Crosthwait, NCHD’s district public health administrator. “We work with so many individuals and agencies that really foster our mission of building healthy communities that we wanted to establish a tradition to publicly acknowledge those who have a positive impact on the health of the public. The honorees were nominated by health department staff and include: * Dorthea Nielsen, RN, who works in the infusion therapy clinic at Sterling Regional Medical Center. * Sherri Amen, the director of the Step by Step Teen Parenting Program at Ft. Morgan High School. * Carol Shafer, a former public health nurse serving Yuma County for more than 30 years. * Gisele Jefferson, CSU Extension consumer protection agent in Washington County. * Nioma Aden, a school nurse for Northeast Colorado Board of Cooperative Educational Services. * Chuck Powell, a Sedgwick County commissioner since 1988. Congratulations Pam and Kathy and thank you for being our Shining Stars!
